the main function of a sales department is to effect sales. It is concerned with the transfer of ownership or merchandize on terms satisfactory to both the buyer and seller. This has to be done at the lowest possible cost.
The basic objective is obviously the achievement of profit through service. A sales department consists of persons working together with a view to market the products manufactured by the organization itself or products purchased for resale. It is thus responsible for all that is necessary to market the product from the stage when the product has left the manufacturing or purchasing department, as the case maybe. The result of the sales effort would naturally depend also on the effort of the other operations and departments such as research, advertising traffic, finance and credit.
