Rahul Chopra, technologist: "A full-scale tidal lagoon programme would give the UK a great opportunity to generate electricity from our massive tidal range at a cost comparable to using fossil fuels or nuclear power.
We must take advantage of the tide as a clean, carbon-free sustainable resource. And the technology involved is relatively simple. We don't need to split the atom here.
It just involves installing a few turbines that would be used in a hydro-electric plant and building a protective breakwater to create a lagoon. The area which would be needed is only about 12 square kilometres.
This project in South Wales is only just the beginning of a new era in the use of energy in the UK."
