## **Why is verbal reasoning important?**

The first thing to mention is that [the 11+ verbal reasoning test](https://www.gostudent.org/en/tuition/11-plus) is one that involves skill rather than knowledge. It’s based on your child’s ability to apply [critical thinking](https://d.docs.live.net/a8e4497e114b764e/Documents/Top%20Critical%20Thinking%20Skills%20%7C%20GoStudent%20%7C%20GoStudent) and [problem-solving](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/11-plus-maths-topics) techniques. 🤔 11+ verbal reasoning proves challenging because it is not something that is generally taught in primary schools. Therefore, even if your child has been a[high performer](https://d.docs.live.net/a8e4497e114b764e/Documents/4%20Common%20Struggles%20Of%20High%20Performing%20Students%20%7C%20GoStudent%20%7C%20GoStudent) academically up until this point, they’re still going to need your help to tackle this part of [the 11 plus.](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/11-plus-cem-exam)

## **How do you pass a verbal reasoning test 11+?**

[Pass marks differ](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/northern-ireland-transfer-test) from [region to region.](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/medway-11-plus-test) Some rank the scores and others have a minimum pass mark. Having said that, generally, the overall pass mark for the eleven plus is 80-85%.  As you are given an overall score, your child could [fail one paper and pass another](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/11-plus-comprehension). But our advice is to try to revise effectively for each paper.

Here are some links to officially endorsed 11+ verbal reasoning papers from  the GL exam board for sale and free familiarisation material [here](https://11plus.gl-assessment.co.uk/free-materials/).

11+ verbal reasoning tests are a [challenge for all concerned](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/grammar-schools-in-scotland) and the pass mark adjusts each year depending on the overall 11+ scores of the cohort. With the right support and preparation, your child can get the best chance of getting a good score.

## **What does a low verbal reasoning score mean?**

A low 11+ verbal reasoning score could mean the following:

2. Bad time management including spending too much time on difficult questions and not knowing when to move on to the next question.
