Encouraging your teen to maintain healthy habits while also trying to keep those habits up yourself is tough. One practice we should *all* be keeping track of is how much water we drink every day, so keep reading to find out how much H20 is the ideal daily amount.
For extra motivation, we’ve created a super-sparkly[DIY video](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/diy-speakers) that will make getting in those daily glasses easy *and* fun! And to make life a little simpler, we’ve compiled some top tips on how to stay healthy that you can share with your teen.
## How to make your very own Mason jar
One of life’s little pleasures surely must be drinking your most-loved drink from your favourite glass or cup – are we right? Well, get ready to adore something new because this DIY video shows you and your teen how to make a super cool drinks tumbler – all you need is a Mason jar and some easy-to-use craft supplies.
### For your Mason jar, you’ll need:
- A large Mason jar (you can find these easily online or in homeware shops)
- Mason jar straw lid insert (you can find these online too but often you will find a Mason jar with this included)
- A spray paint colour of your choice
- Glitter
- Permanent vinyl stickers (we used an emoji, but you can choose any pictures or letters)
- Mod Podge (you can also buy this easily online, or try your local crafts shops)
- Masking tape
- A small bowl
- A paintbrush
### OK, let’s go!
1. Take the Mason jar and apply masking tape around it to protect the area that you don’t want to be painted. As you can see in the video, we chose to spray paint the bottom third of the jar.
2. Carefully spray paint the bottom of the jar. Don’t hold the spray can too close to the jar or you’ll get paint runs – aim to hold it about 10-12 inches away. Leave it for around 30 minutes to dry.
3. In a small bowl, pour some Mod Podge.
4. In the same bowl, pour some glitter.
5. Mix them up.
6. Using the paintbrush, paint the Mod Podge/glitter mixture onto the painted section of the jar. This will also help seal the spray paint and make your tumbler sparkle. ✨
7. Grab the stickers and apply them anywhere you want on the jar and voila – pop the lid on and enjoy sipping your favourite drinks (such as water 😉) from your fancy new Mason jar. Cheers! 🥛
## How much water should you drink a day?
While there’s a lot of conflicting information out there, the[NHS states](https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/food-guidelines-and-food-labels/water-drinks-nutrition/) that we should be drinking 6-8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. Of course, water is the healthiest and cheapest choice to get your daily fix, but if water isn’t your teen’s top choice, they can opt for low-fat milk, plain tea or coffee with no sugar and sugar-free drinks.
However, jazzing up water might make them change their mind; slices of cucumber, lemon, lime, orange or even fresh mint leaves can make H20 taste delicious. 👌
The most important thing is to stay hydrated in the healthiest way possible, and now that you and your teen have a brand-new drinks tumbler to sip from, there’s no excuse. 😇
## What are 5 ways to stay healthy?
- ### Keep a balanced diet
[Getting your kids to eat healthily](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/get-kids-eating-healthy) is not always easy, especially when they associate the idea of[eating well](https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/food-guidelines-and-food-labels/water-drinks-nutrition/) with boring and bland food. Luckily, the likes of YouTube,[TikTok](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/educational-tik-tok-accounts) and Instagram have opened up a whole new world of easy-to-follow food videos that offer nutritious *and* delicious dishes. Plus, if your teen is[interested in cooking](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/best-cooking-websites-for-kids), this is a great way to teach them some new recipe ideas. 💡
- ### Stay active
Whether it’s their[favourite sport](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/top-5-sports-every-kid-should-try), an[outdoor](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/outdoor-learning-activities-for-kids) run or an at-home workout video, there are many ways you can encourage your teen to stay active.[Research has shown](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/10/161004081548.htm) that having an exercise buddy increases the amount of exercise we do, so why not join your teen in their workout to give them the push they need? 💪
- ### Protect your skin
Sunscreen’s not just for the[summer holidays](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/ways-to-study-for-school-over-the-summer); we should all be protecting our skin from the sun every day to avoid its harmful effects. From sun creams to dedicated SPF (sun protection factor) moisturisers, there are so many options to choose from – just make sure to go for a minimum of 30 when selecting your SPF. 🌞
- ### Get enough sleep
Teens often stay up late playing[computer games](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/the-first-computer-for-your-child), talking to their friends, watching Netflix or, sometimes,[studying](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/how-to-retain-information-when-studying). It’s important for[teenagers to get between 8-10 hours of sleep](https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/how-much-sleep.html) every night because not only are they going through many biological changes, but they’re also experiencing more daily pressures from school, extra-curricular activities and maybe part-time jobs. Limited screen time late in the evening will help, as will a relaxing[bedtime routine](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/bedtime-tips).
- ### Reduce sitting time
Sitting for long periods of time can[negatively affect health](https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/exercise-guidelines/why-sitting-too-much-is-bad-for-us/), so try to employ house rules around[sitting time](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/correct-sitting-posture). Encouraging your teen to[help with house chores](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/brilliant-ideas-for-chores-for-kids) or to sometimes study while standing will break up bouts of sitting. They could also take a stab at making some of the awesome gadgets from our DIY videos –[friendship bracelets](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/diy-lets-make-a-friendship-bracelet), a[tornado in a bottle](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/diy-lets-make-a-tornado-in-a-bottle), a[stress ball](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/diy-lets-make-a-stress-ball),[speakers](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/blog/diy-speakers) – we’ve got the lot!
