Standardized tests are rarely any student’s favorite, but they’re still a very important part of modern education. College-entrance exams can especially spark fear in the heart of even the most dedicated of students! However, they’re necessary for schools to assess applicants on a level playing field. Since its creation in 1959, the ACT exam has been the choice for millions of students applying to college. If your high schooler is taking the next step into higher education, GoStudent has the best ACT prep to get them the score they need to get into the school they want. We’re here to tell you how.
The ACT was created by University of Iowa professor Everett Franklin Lindquist as an alternative to the already widely-known SAT exam. The exam is administered by American College Testing, a non-profit organization.
The ACT consists of multiple-choice tests in four separate areas: English, math, reading, and science. It also is available to take with a writing test, but this part is optional. If a student chooses to take the ACT with writing, their final score still will not be impacted by their writing scores.
Students register for the exam online, which is administered at thousands of test sites across the US, US territories, and Puerto Rico. There are multiple different test dates available annually. Many students choose to take the exam early, so they have time to retake if necessary before college admission deadlines. Students’ ACT scores are sent directly to the colleges of their choice.
Fees for the ACT differ depending on if the student is taking the writing test or not. For families unable to pay for the exam, fee waivers are available for qualified applicants. There are also testing accommodations available for students with disabilities or special needs.
Students taking the ACT are given a Composite score, ranging from 1 to 36. Here’s how the exam is scored:
Though the writing section of the test is optional and does not count towards the Composite score, if students opt to complete the writing section, it will be scored. However, it is done differently. Students are assessed in four areas of writing:
These four areas are scored from 2 to 12. From these scores, a single subject-level writing score is determined, which also ranges from 2 to 12. For students who excel in writing and wish to pursue writing-degree programs in college, taking the ACT writing test can increase their chances of admission to their school of choice
Additionally, students are also given a “readiness” score in the core four subject-area tests. These scores, based on a Benchmark score, indicate how ready a student is to perform adequately in a corresponding first-year college course. For example, a low readiness score in math means a student is not ready for a standard first-year college math course. This holistic approach allows students to better see what areas they need to improve in and also to know if they are truly ready for college academia.
The best ACT prep is to practice. ACT offers official online practice tests and prep books for students to become more familiar with the exam. Knowing the exam format helps students feel more prepared for the test, decreasing anxiety when it comes to testing day.
However, while practice tests are important, an individual tutor is essential to really set your child up for success. GoStudent has the best ACT tutors around, and we’ll get your child the ACT score they need to get into the school they want.
