They just need a little help finding them, and that’s what GoStudent is for.

Math is an essential part of learning

Nationwide, all school curriculums require students to study math at each grade level, which can be discouraging for a child struggling with the subject. Your child may be dreaming of the day when they no longer have to break out a calculator in class. However, even if math is challenging for your student, they are getting so many benefits from studying it!

Math is part of our everyday lives, and understanding it is essential to a well-rounded education. To understand time and money, you have to understand math! Math also helps children develop their analytical and problem-solving skills, equipping them to handle challenges in the future. Additionally, math helps students learn how to organize and make sense of the world around them. After all, numbers and shapes are all around us! The logical thinking required of math has real-world applications, too. Though your kid may not see how finding the circumference of a circle or solving for x will help them outside the classroom, they are enriching their minds in ways they don’t even realize.

What are the different types of math?

There are many different types of math, and some students may find certain studies for difficult than others. The most common types of math lessons in school are:

  • Arithmetic - Involving the study of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, children usually study this at the elementary level before moving on to more difficult concepts. It’s often our first introduction to math too. When you’re teaching your baby to count, you’re teaching them arithmetic!
  • Algebra - Algebra is when things can start to get tricky, as it’s when letters and equations are introduced into arithmetic. It involves a lot of memorizing rules and equations.
  • Geometry - This is the study of shapes--learning how to calculate their height, width, length, volume, etc. It can be really fun for children looking to make sense of the world around them, and interesting for children who enjoy art.
  • Trigonometry - Quite similar to geometry, but as the name suggests, it focuses solely on the study of triangles. It’s one of the more advanced types of math, usually studied in the final years of high school.
  • Calculus - This is often the last kind of math students will take in high school, or one they will study at the college level. Often broken up into pre-calculus and calculus classes, it can be quite challenging to understand.
  • Statistics- Students will likely not study statistics until high school. Many colleges require statistics as part of a specific course curriculum as well, especially for students studying business.

All these different levels of math can make things quite challenging for students! With so many equations and formulas to remember, it can be difficult to keep track of them all, especially for neurodiverse children. When children struggle with math, it can often lead to them losing confidence in their intellect, which only makes the subject even more challenging.

However, understanding and succeeding in math is important for any child’s academic progress. It’s one of the fundamental subjects throughout schooling, as well as a subject students are most frequently assessed on. Most yearly standardized tests have a math component, as do both high school and college entrance exams.
