PSAT: Everything you need to know to help your child pass this essential exam

How to get the best PSAT test prep

The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is an important exam–or three important exams, we should say! The PSAT helps students prepare for college-level academics. The exam comes in three forms, all part of the SAT Suite of Assessments:

  • PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10: These exams are taken by students in 8th & 9th grades and 10th grade, respectively. They are used to assess college readiness, and scores are not sent to colleges.
  • PSAT/NMSQT: This exam is taken by students in the Fall of their Junior Year (11th grade). It’s also used to assess college readiness, and schools are also not sent to colleges. As the name suggested, high scores on the PSAT qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Program. This is run by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a non-profit organization. Students with high enough PSAT/NMSQT scores are invited to join the program and apply for scholarship money.

All three PSAT exams serve as a prep for the SAT. Unlike the SAT, the PSAT is administered directly by your child’s school and is taken during regular school hours. However, not all schools administer the PSAT, and not all schools administer all three versions of the exam.

Though these exams aren’t as high-stakes as the infamous SAT, scoring highly on the PSAT can help set students up for future success. If your student is looking for some PSAT prep, GoStudent is your solution with the best PSAT tutors around.

What is on the PSAT exams?

Like the SAT, the PSAT exams are made up of three tests covering three different topics. The tests are tailored to the appropriate grade level. They consist of:

  • Reading: This assesses students' reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. Students read five different passages and answer corresponding multiple-choice questions. This section also tests students on vocabulary.
  • Writing and Language: In this test, students read passages and find mistakes and weaknesses in the text. This is also multiple choice.
  • Math: This test assesses students’ skills in multiple areas of math–algebra, problem-solving/data analysis, and readiness for college-level math. Most questions are multiple-choice, but some require writing in answers. Students are allowed to use a calculator for a portion of the math exam.

Students have 2 hours and 25 minutes to complete the PSAT 8/9, and 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete the PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT. Each subject test is timed as well. Students with disabilities can have more time to complete the exam, pending approval from the College Board.

How is the PSAT scored?

The PSAT is scored the same way as the SAT, making the exams valuable prep for the SAT.

The PSAT 8/9 has a score range of 240 - 1440, while the PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT have a score range of 320 - 1520. These scores are determined by combining two section scores: 1. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (made up of the Reading and Writing Tests), and 2. Math.

Each section is first given a raw score, based on how many questions the student got correct. Then, this raw score is converted into a scaled score. These two scaled scores are combined to get the total score.

On their score reports, students are also given a breakdown of scores of the three individual tests, as well as cross-test scores (drawn from all 3 tests) that assess analysis in science and analysis in history/social studies. Additionally, students are given subscores that assess how well they did on the specific types of questions appearing on the PSAT.

The PSAT/NMSQT includes an additional score, the NMSC Selection Index Score. This score is double the sum of the student’s Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test Scores. The exact score needed to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program varies year-to-year, but students generally need to score in the top 1% of all test-takers to qualify.

GoStudent’s expert SAT prep will get your child the best score possible

Students are often relaxed about the PSAT, since it “doesn’t count” for college. While not being anxious over an exam is a good thing, prepping for the PSAT can help students become comfortable with the process of SAT prep. Additionally, doing well on the PSAT/NMSQT can mean significant scholarship money, significantly reducing the burden of paying for college. Doing well on any of the PSAT tests can also increase your child’s confidence in their academic abilities, something any parent wants!

The best PSAT prep is to practice, practice, practice! The College Board, which administers the PSAT, offers official online practice tests and books for students to become more familiar with the exam, and your child’s school may offer PSAT prep as well.

Practice tests are essential, but an individual tutor is what will really equip your child for success. GoStudent has the best PSAT tutors available, and we’ll get your child the PSAT scores they need to increase their confidence–and maybe earn some scholarship money, too!
