SSAT: Everything you need to know to help your child pass these essential exams

SSAT Test Prep

Standardized tests are rarely any student’s favorite, but they’re still a very important part of modern education. These exams exist as a uniform assessment for students regardless of the school they attend and are frequently used as entrance exams to elite institutions. You’re likely already familiar with the SAT and ACT from your own high school days. However, there’s another exam that exists for students applying to secondary school. It’s called the SSAT, and we’re here to tell you how GoStudent’s SSAT prep will get them the score they need to get into the school they want.

What is the SSAT?

The SSAT (Secondary School Admissions Test) is a standardized test used to assess students applying to independent and private schools in the US and Canada. The test is administered by The Enrollment Management Association, and is broken down into 3 levels:

  • Elementary Level: For students in grades 3 and 4 applying to grades 4 and 5
  • Middle Level: For students in grades 5-7 applying to grades 6-8
  • Upper Level: For students in grades 8-11 applying for grades 9-12

Though the elementary level is a shorter exam in both duration and number of questions, all versions of the exam cover the same key subject areas. These are:

  • Quantitative (Math): Composed of math computation
  • Verbal: Vocabulary and analogy questions
  • Reading: Reading passages
  • Experimental: These questions cover reading, math, and verbal, but are not counted towards reported scores
  • Writing Sample: This is also isn’t scored but is used by schools to assess writing skills

How do students take the SSAT?

There are multiple ways for students to take the SSAT. For students living in the US and Canada, they can take the Middle or Upper Level SSAT as:

  • A paper-based test at a local test center or with a qualified educational consultant
  • A computer-based test at a Prometric test center
  • A computer-based test taken at home with a virtual proctor

The Elementary Level SSAT can only be taken as a paper-based exam at a test center or with a qualified educational consultant. Additionally, students living internationally applying to schools in the US and Canada can only take the exam at a test center. In addition, students can take the SSAT more than once, though the exact number of times depends on the testing mode.

The pricing of the exam varies depending on the mode and level of testing. For families unable to pay for the exam, fee waivers are available for qualified applicants. There are also testing accommodations available for students with disabilities or special needs.

How is the SSAT scored?

The SSAT is a “norm-referenced test.” This means students’ SSAT scores are compared to a hypothetical average student, and this hypothetical student is from a norm group consisting of all first-time test-takers over the past 3 years in the US and Canada. To put it simply, test administrators determine an average score from other test-takers at the same grade level and compare your student’s score to that one.

Scores are broken down into two total scores:

  • The total scaled score shows the student’s score position between the highest and lowest score, as well as how it compares to the average.
  • The total percentile compares your child’s total scaled score to the total scaled score of others who have taken the SSAT. If your student is in the 80th percentile, for example, it means they scored equal to or higher than 80 percent of other test-takers in their grade.

Additionally, individual sections (verbal, quantitative, and reading) have their own scores. These are also provided as both a scaled score and a percentile score. Analyzing the section scores can help students determine areas they need improvement in.
