Scottish Higher Qualifications (referred to as Highers) are traditionally taken in the fifth year (S5) of secondary school, usually when students are turning 16 or 17. A Higher course is the standard requirement to get into higher education. Completing Higher exams can also lead to employment or training.
Scotland has its own education system and the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is the national accreditation and awarding body. The Scottish Higher is one of the National Qualifications as set out by the SQA:
The National 5 qualifications are more similar to the GCSE than the Higher.
A Higher is similar to the A-levels, except Highers are one-year classes and A-levels are two years. Highers are often regarded as the equivalent of the first A-level year, and Advanced Highers compared to the second A-level year. However, Advanced Highers are a slightly higher level and students who complete their Advanced Higher can jump straight into the second year of uni in Scotland.
If your child is at the stage where they are choosing which Higher lessons to take, this can be a challenging decision for them. Of course, some kids will know their chosen career path and the Higher courses they need to take will be dictated by that. Students wanting to complete a Higher course will usually study four to five Highers.
What do you do if your child isn’t sure about higher education and beyond? We recommend selecting a good cross-section of Higher lessons to leave options open later. 😀 Many parents ask us which is the hardest Higher course, and conversely, which is the easiest?
It’s not possible to compare the Higher courses like for like because you have Higher subjects spanning many categories. Plus there are different assessment methods across the Higher lessons, some of which appeal more than others depending on the student.
The most important thing to remember is that every kid is different. A Higher exam that one kid might sail through another could fail. If your child doesn’t have to take any specific Higher lessons because they’re unsure of what they want to do later, stick to your child’s strengths. It will be a more enjoyable year for them and it’s easier to achieve good results when you are engaged and motivated.
To give you an example of how achievable the Higher course qualification is, here are some key stats regarding results recorded from the 2021 Higher exams:
As you can see, good results are more than possible. If your child can stay on top of the Higher lessons they take and make Higher revision a focus throughout the year, they can do well on their Higher exam. If they need a little confidence boost or help studying, you can always get a Higher private tutor, which we’ll explain what to look for later.
All of the Higher lessons have different assessment requirements. Below are examples of some of the Higher exams currently planned for 2022. You will find the exam timetable for 2022 in the SQA website but remember that schools and colleges can change start times so always triple check exam dates and times to make sure you have them correct closer to the time.
Mastering the Higher revision strategy will be essential for getting the grades your child wants. At Higher level, they are just one step away from taking their Advanced Higher or starting university. As you can imagine, this means it’s necessary that the Higher exams are a great deal more challenging than the National 5 assessment.
Here are some top tips for making the most of Higher revision time:
Higher private tutoring can be beneficial on many levels. It’s not just for students who are struggling with a Higher course or topic either. Let’s look at how Higher tuition can be advantageous. ✔️
Your child may feel like they are on top of the material, which is great. However, learning the right study techniques is essential in order to reach the best grades possible. There have been plenty of cases of good students receiving average results because they didn’t have the right knowledge about what to prepare for and how to go about it.
We find over and over again that Higher students on a one-to-one basis feel more confident and less inhibited to ask questions. This means that any problem areas are identified much faster and with less stress, rather than your child struggling along in silence just hoping they’ll work it out before their Higher exam.
You can choose the right Higher tutor for your child. Every student learns differently and in a classroom environment, this is limited to a one-size-fits-all style. Make sure you pick a respected Higher private tuition school that gives their Higher tutors adequate training. You also want one that matches your child to the right Higher tutor. A good fit is everything.
By identifying your child’s strengths, a Higher tutor can focus on weaker areas of Higher lessons they are taking. This will boost your child’s confidence and enhance their subject matter knowledge at the same time.
If you choose a Higher online tutor then you will have a much larger pool of Higher tutors to pick from. Higher online tutoring also saves valuable time because there’s no need to travel. At this stage in your child’s life as a student, every hour counts. Not only this but your kid will have access to all the material they are covering with their Higher tutor online, in one spot.
At GoStudent, we will match the best Higher tutor to your child’s needs and they will analyse your kid’s preferred learning style and be able to tailor their teaching specifically for maximum results.
There isn’t just one Higher online course available, or one style to choose from. The most common Higher online courses you’ll find are on-demand learning or scheduled classes (often in the evenings). There are also hybrids that can include face-to-face sessions.
Whether you are considering going back to study or want your child to study online for whatever reason (e.g. you live in a remote area) it’s all possible. 👍
As you would expect with a Higher online course, most (if not all) of the material will be online. Some will still require you to buy Higher course books. All of your lesson notes etc. should be available online for these Higher courses. You can also find some Higher online revision available on the SQA site.
Higher online tutoring goes hand-in-hand with a Higher online course. A Higher private tutor can help fill in any gaps and offer flexible teaching times. Depending on how many Higher lessons you are completing online and if you (or your child) are struggling with a subject or just keen to come top of the class, scheduling a regular Higher online tutor session will be advantageous.
We hope you’re feeling a lot more confident now about when and how to find the best Higher tutor as well nailing the Higher course. Of course, it’s not just as simple as that for your kid, they’re going to have some serious study to do. But, if you can help guide them on the planning so there’s no rush and late nights before their Higher exam, you’ll both be better off.
Remember, specialised Higher private tuition can be there to help you from the beginning to stay on track. It plays an important role in preparing students for their Higher exam and positively influences future study habits too so is a good investment.
It’s never too early to get in contact with us if you have any queries. We also offer a free trial lesson if you’d just like to jump right in and get your kid started. Either way, we’re here for you whenever you need Higher support or advice.
