Hello! Thank you for reading my profile, I'm Abbie, a postgrad student in Japanese and Chinese translation. I am passionate about teaching and motivating my students to branch out from topics typical at school. My key aims in all lessons are to make steps towards building students' confidence in the desired subject and building upon academic skills to feel prepared for exams or tests. I strive to ensure my students enjoy each lesson, feel safe in my lesson space and feel comfortable asking and discussing anything about the subject. I plan my lessons to fit each student's style of learning and interests for example studying the history of manga in Japanese lessons or diving into the world of gothic literature in English lessons - there is something for everyone! I can help with exam preparation and practice and provide extra support/materials for personal study. Subjects I teach (up to GCSE): English Language and Literature, English as a Second Language, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Welsh I have been tutoring for over 3 years now, both abroad and in the UK. I have experience working with students of all ages and with different abilities (including language abilities). I have N3 proficiency in Japanese and high proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (traditional and simplified).

I have availability for students Mondays and Wednesdays daytimes only. I also work with students on a weekly basis at a minimum to ensure momentum and consistency for the student. I have been an educator and trainer for over 17 years and love nothing more than seeing students achieve their goals. I am a scuba diving instructor as my main role and work all over the world. I enjoy watching Netflix and love diving even when I am not in work. I have been lucky to see a lot of the world through all my roles during my career. I tutor 11+, English up to the end of year 9 only and also tutor mathematics and science up to GCSE. I have knowledge of all UK countries curriculum and also the German curriculum. I myself completed the 11+ equivalent when younger and understand the commitment and learning that is needed to succeed. My favourite subjects in school were maths, science and physical education. I am also experienced in working with children with additional learning needs.

I have a Masters in Creative Writing Oxford University. I've got a 2:1 from University of Sussex in Drama and Film Studies. I've worked with children ranging from 3 months to 18 years, in formal educational settings and at home. I have experience tutoring in English and Creative Writing at Secondary Level, helping students raise their grades one, two or three levels higher at GCSE and achieving top scores at A Level. I also have experience tutoring English, Creative Writing at a Primary Level as well as KS1 Maths. I have worked as a lecturer at De Montfort University for over 15 years. I hold a PGCE in further Education, an MA in English Language Teaching, and a BA honours in English. I taught English for Academic Purposes at university. This enabled me to develop various teaching approaches at different levels of English usage. I have also taught KS3-KS5 in the UK and abroad during which I have been observed several times and demonstrated that I was outstanding. I have used various teaching aids ranging from pictures, flash cards, to a variety of IT techniques. I have also used peer interaction and assessment to develop learners. Teaching at university enabled me to teach presentation skills. This has enabled me to do the same during training, coaching and mentoring sessions with colleagues. I have mentored a number of tutors. In my experience as a university lecturer I have used a variety of online platforms to teach students during the Covid-19 pandemic. I began my journey into English in 2002 when I did a BA (hons) in English at Demontfort university. Following this I did an MA in Children’s Literature in 2005 due to my immense love of reading. However, it was only when I landed a job at a resources centre that I decided to specialize in teaching and so I did a PGCE in education and an MA in English language teaching both in 2007-2009. I absolutely love teaching since then - as cliche as it sounds it is truly my passion and the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I love my students and to see them excel truly makes me content. I’ve been told that I have a gift for building a rapport with learners and I to feel this is something that comes naturally to me because as a student I myself struggled with being misunderstood and branded as a ‘bad student’. I feel as a result I can relate to students and their struggles more easily. I’m also very patient and an excellent listener.
