Is your child taking Gaelic lessons? If they need any help or motivation then Gaelic tutoring will do just the trick, whether they’re learning it as a modern language, or doing a Gaelic course that delves deep into the literature and impact of the language in society. Stick with us to find out what’s involved in a Gaelic course and where to find a top-rated Gaelic tutor.
Scottish Gaelic lessons (for learners) are available under a number of national qualifications that are taught as a modern language. They are designed for teens who are new to the language and/or have little knowledge of it. Under SQA, the learner Gaelic courses are run from National 2 through to Advanced Higher levels. SQA also has Gaelic qualifications in the higher and further education sectors.
Under the learner Gaelic lessons, your child will be taught as per other modern languages and develop skills in reading, listening, writing, and talking. ✍️ They will also learn how Gaelic relates to English in relation to society, culture, employability, and learning.
SQA also runs Gàidhlig national qualifications from National 2 to Advanced Higher levels. These Gaelic courses are for fluent Gaelic speakers. Your teen will further develop their language skills to be able to use Gàidhlig for different purposes, audiences, and contexts. They will study texts and delve into the complexities and the impact of the Gaelic language.
No matter which Gaelic course your child is taking, Gaelic tutoring can be a great support. It will provide one-on-one support in a comfortable environment that gives your teen extra practice.
Gaelic courses up until National 4 are not graded, although students must pass all of the units to receive a qualification. From National 5 onwards, students will be marked. All the Scottish Gaelic exams (learners and fluent speakers) will cover at least four elements: listening, talking, writing, and reading.
Irish Gaelic is taught as a modern language and there are four units: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It’s available at entry level, GCSE, and GCE.
GCSE Gaeilge (Gaelic course) is also available and it has more literature content than the Irish Gaelic course which is offered as a modern language. This qualification will teach your child to investigate the use of language and translate texts from Irish to English and vice versa. 📚
No matter which Gaelic course your teen is taking, Gaelic tutoring will increase their grades and understanding of the language.
All of the Irish Gaelic lessons will cover at least four principle skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Any Gaelic exams will always cover the four areas too. GCSE Gaeilge has two controlled assessment components:
In Scotland, if your child is learning Gaelic or is at one of the 60 primary schools that offer Gaelic medium education, Gaelic tuition can help at this age too.
The same applies to primary school Gaelic in Ireland. There are a number of reasons why Gaelic tutoring is beneficial for all students, which we’ll look at now.
Gaelic tuition will help your child whether they’re finding some aspects of the language challenging or if they love it and want the best grades possible. A Gaelic tutor will make sure they do the right amount of Gaelic revision and cover the topics relevant to their level.
While your child can do Gaelic revision on their own, it’s difficult to improve and perfect the spoken and written aspects without guidance. For that reason, a Gaelic tutor is really important if your child is serious about improving and even more so if they want to master the language and attain fluency.
At GoStudent, we have Gaelic tutors who specialise in Scottish Gaelic and others who are qualified in Irish Gaelic. We make sure we have a good spread of Gaelic tutors across all levels too because it’s crucial to match someone to your child who understands the syllabus and how best to customise classes. 🥰
All of our classes are online so it doesn’t matter where your Gaelic tutor’s based, as long as they’re the right person for the task. Your child will get a tailored Gaelic revision and learning plan drawn up so they’re clear on what they need to achieve. You’ll receive regular progress updates including what they’ve been learning in their private Gaelic lessons.
You don’t need to wait until your child finds the subject difficult or hits a speed bump. A Gaelic tutor will identify any problem areas along the way and sort this out quick smart so that your child can remain confident and positive about their Gaelic course. You can book a free trial class to see exactly how we work and what Gaelic tutoring will do for your child.
