New tutor

Here’s a warm, natural **~250-word “about me”** that feels personal but still professional and tutor-appropriate: --- Hi, I’m Rebecca! I’m a Sociology tutor with a strong passion for humanities subjects, particularly sociology, English, and academic writing. I’m currently studying Politics and International Relations at university, which has strengthened my understanding of social theory, critical thinking, and structured essay writing. My academic background allows me to support students not only with content knowledge but also with developing strong analytical and evaluation skills. My interest in sociology comes from wanting to understand how society works and why social issues affect different groups in different ways. I enjoy helping students make connections between theory and real-world examples, as this often makes the subject more engaging and easier to understand. My tutoring experience includes supporting my younger sister and my neighbours’ children with primary school work, 11+ preparation, and GCSE subjects. Through this, I’ve developed a patient, calm, and encouraging teaching style. I understand that many students struggle with confidence, particularly in essay-based subjects, so I focus on breaking topics down into manageable steps and creating a supportive learning environment. In my lessons, I use clear explanations, discussion, exam-style questions, and structured writing practice to help students build both understanding and exam technique. My aim is to help students feel more confident, capable, and motivated while making steady academic progress. Languages: B2 German, English Native Speaker Canadian Highschool Diploma: English 30-1, Math 30-1, Biology 30-1, Chemistry 30-1 Bachelor of Arts in Ministry with a double major in Outdoor Leadership Preferred age group: any I grew up in Canada, but I have recently moved to Germany with my husband where I am learning German, and hoping to study soon. In Canada I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Ministry, with a Major in Outdoor Leadership. I worked in this field for a few years, but eventually found myself drawn to the business and financial side of things in the organization that I worked for. In the future, I would like to pursue education and work in business and finance. My favorite hobby is being active in the outdoors. I enjoy rock climbing, mountain biking, and almost anything else that gets me outside and being active. I also love to relax with a good book on a quite day or evening. My other qualifications are not particularly connected to tutoring. I am certified to teach a number of adventure activities. I am a Top Rope Climbing instructor, certified by the ACMG, I am a level 1 Mountain Bike instructor, certified with PMBIA, OCC Hiking Field Leader, and I also took an 80 wilderness first aid course. These things give a bit of a picture about what I am interested in, and what I have pursued learning about or teaching in my life. Tutoring is new to me, but I do have a lot of experience with teaching and instructing in an outdoor context. I think I can easily apply my outdoor instruction and facilitation skills, to tutoring.

What are GCSEs?

GCSEs are qualifications that students in the UK achieve at the end of their compulsory education.

A GCSE grade is given to each subject and calculated on written exams, practical exams and coursework.

How important are GCSEs?

GCSEs are a universally recognised qualification in the UK.

Specific GCSE grades may be required when applying for further education. This includes applications for college, sixth form and university, or when applying for a job.

GCSEs can come with a lot of pressure and expectation but your child can achieve the grades that they need with lots of practice as well as guidance from a GCSE tutor.

At what age do you take GCSEs?

Students take their GCSE exams around age 16, in the last months of the academic year at school, although the syllabus is taught between the ages of 14-16 years.

There is now more weight than ever being placed on final exams (instead of coursework), so students must be well equipped to perform on the day.

Which GCSEs are compulsory?

The core subjects for GCSEs are maths, English and science.

Other GCSEs include languages (usually French, German or Spanish), humanities (such as history, geography or religious studies), art (music, art, media, drama) and technical (food technology, design and technology, computer science).

Can GCSEs be re-marked?

If your child is on the cusp of getting the grade that they hoped for or the result simply does not seem fair, the paper in question can be sent back to the exam board for appeal.

Many students appeal exam results when they are one or two marks away from the next grade up. The right study plan and a good understanding of the marking scheme for each exam can help avoid this situation.

If your child has achieved marks close to the grade line in their mock exams, it could be time to get them some help with a GCSE tutor.
