Hello, my name is Aasim. I am currently a 5th year medical student aspiring to one day become an orthopaedic surgeon. I went to secondary school and sixth form in London , after which I took a gap year and started Medicine at university afterwards. During my gap year I spent time working as an HCA at the Royal London Hospital as well as tutoring some of my family friends' children for chemistry and maths. I also spent a fair amount of time pursuing my own hobbies and interests such as drawing, reading and football which I try to play once a week with my friends. I like to incorporate visual aids in my lessons as I, myself, am a very visual learner. I also like to maintain a light-hearted environment when teaching my students, often employing humour during my lessons as I feel that it can make the student more relaxed and enables them to learn and absorb concepts in a stress-free environment. After covering a particular topic, I often go through questions together with students so that they can apply their knowledge in a practical setting which is what they will have to do in their exams after all. GCSEs (2016): Maths = A* Further Maths = A* Biology = A* Chemistry = A* Physics = A* English Lang. = A* English Lit. = A* Religious Studies = A* History = A* Art = A* Spanish = A* A-levels (2018): Biology: A* Chemistry: A* Maths: A* Further Maths: A Psychology: A

I have been working as a freelance English tutor since 2023, working with online tutoring companies GoStudent, Edumentors and Tutorful, and Glasgow-based in-person company Clever Tutors. I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a First Class Honours in Drama and Contemporary Performance in 2023, and recently received my MLitt in Theatre Studies with Distinction from the University of Glasgow. Having left school in 2019 with an A in Advanced Higher English and seven Highers, I am very familiar with the difficulties many students face when sitting their SQA exams. I have also tutored pupils at the BGE/KS3 stage, working with them on reading, writing and literacy to help them develop important life skills that improve their performance across the curriculum. I have also tutored GCSE English for the AQA and EdExcel curriculums, helping numerous students improve their mock exam results in both English Language and Literature and supporting them through their exams. Before tutoring English, I was an assistant tutor for the LAMDA Acting classes at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness for two years, and served as the CREATIVE Ambassador to Millburn Academy, directing the school drama club for three years. My tutoring style focuses on the student, working with them to identify their needs and goals, creating a learning plan that engages their creativity and providing support beyond the lessons through the setting of homework and challenges to further the student's learning. I always take time to get to know each student on an individual basis to better tailor my lessons to their needs and interests, and I combine a laid-back approachability with structure as needed. I have previously worked with young people with ADHD, autism and dyslexia, and have received positive feedback from parents and pupils who have benefitted from my patience, passion and diligence. Outside of teaching, I am a writer and theatre director. I love films, playing music and cooking. All you need to know about IGCSE tuition

What is the IGCSE?

The IGCSE (which stands for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is taken by students aged 14-16 (Year 10 and 11) to prepare them for further pre-university level study, such as A-levels.

It offers the same level of education as a traditional GCSE but does not have a UK-centric curriculum. For example, Shakespeare is a compulsory part of GCSE English Literature but not the IGCSE.

Children in state schools usually take GCSEs whilst those in private and international schools are more likely to take IGCSEs. Universities do not distinguish between the two when it comes to entry requirements. The exams are assessed externally.

What is the focus of the IGCSE?

The IGCSE focuses on developing understanding, skill, and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Subject content

  • The application of knowledge and understanding to new as well as familiar situations

  • Intellectual enquiry

  • Flexibility and responsiveness to change

  • Working and communicating in English

  • Influencing outcomes

  • Cultural awareness

What subjects are studied?

IGCSEs are available in a broad range of subjects but curriculums vary considerably depending on the school.

Students typically take seven to nine subjects, which must include the core subjects of English, mathematics and science (biology, chemistry, physics).

Optional subjects include humanities (history, geography), modern languages, the creative arts (art, music), STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and sports.

Preparing for the IGCSEs

Historically, the GCSE had a greater amount of coursework in the syllabus compared to the IGCSE. This has changed in recent years and both qualifications are based mainly on the end-of-course exams.

The exams test theoretical knowledge, practical skills, problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills – which are essential for further education as well as future careers.

Revision is key to retaining information and reinforcing understanding and should be done regularly rather than cramming all the content at the last minute.

Practicing past papers and taking mock exams will allow you to become familiar with the exam structure, improve your time management skills and discover any areas of weakness.

How can a tutor help with preparing for the IGCSEs?

A tutor can help at any stage of the process, whether it is over the two years of study or in the run-up to the exams.

GoStudent IGCSE tutors have experience in the specific subjects covered in the curriculum as well as a proven track record of success. They offer personalised lessons that can target problematic areas and can help create realistic and achievable study schedules that balance your time across the different subjects.

ICGSE tutors can also teach you effective study techniques. These will help you not only with the exams but in your future academic career.

If you are struggling with either the coursework or exam preparation, don’t delay seeking help. Feeling prepared and confident for your exams allows you to have a clear and focused mind - and achieve to your full potential.

Answering student's questions about iGCSE level online lessons

Is private iGCSE tuition affordable?

Your child can get iGCSE tuition for as low as £21.99 per session. The price of each private tuition session depends on how regularly and for how long your child takes tuition with us. Book a free trial session with us and you can find out how affordable private tuition with GoStudent can be for you.

How many other levels does GoStudent offer other than iGCSE tuition?

As well as private iGCSE tuition, GoStudent can help your child with 11 other levels. Pick from many subjects including Spanish, Economics, French. And with GoStudent your child isn't tied into one level. If they are taking iGCSE tuition but then need support with a different level, we can help them get that support with a tutor specialised in that level.

How can your child benefit from iGCSE tuition?

The main reason that parents often start to look for a iGCSE tutor is to improve their child’s academic performance. It’s needless to say that tutoring will prepare your child for important exams and tests and address specific problem areas that they might have in a particular subject. Your child’s grades and understanding of the subject will improve when working with a tutor but there are also other benefits you might consider when deciding whether to opt for private iGCSE tutoring. Tutoring encourages self-directed learning. This means that your child will learn to take the initiative in their schoolwork, with the result that they will feel less overwhelmed or frustrated with school and more in control of their own learning. They will also learn study skills that will help them in life when it comes to university and beyond. Whether it’s learning to overcome obstacles in their studies, losing the fear of asking questions or even working on their social skills. Sign up for a free trial lesson to discover the benefits of tutoring for yourself.

Can my child take private iGCSE tuition online?

With GoStudent your child can get private tuition online from one of our iGCSE tutors. Online tuition is a great option for you and your child, meaning you don't have to take your child to a class or cover the cost of a tutor to come to your home. Why not see how private tuition can work for you and your child by booking a free trial lesson.
