After 20 years of secondary school classroom teaching in English and History, I am branching out into online teaching. I taught in London, at Walthamstow for my probationary year in 1991, and have since taught in South Africa, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. I run Parkrun, grow and sell organic vegetables, and enjoy wilderness walking. After A Bachelor of Arts in History and English, at Wits University in Johannesburg in 1984, I did a postgraduate Higher Diploma in Education, in English and History. I then taught in London and South Africa for nine years, during which time I qualified with a Bachelor of Education in Applied Linguistics, from Wits University. In 1998, my family and I went to Vancouver, British Columbia, for me to study a Masters Degree in Theology. We returned to SA in 2002. In 2016, I graduated with a PhD in History, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. I am currently enrolled for my TTA TEFL certificate, Level 5, to qualify and teach EFL, from April 2025.

Obtaining my MD degree from the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland has been a transformative journey, equipping me with a diverse array of skills and experiences. Throughout my medical education, I've not only delved deep into the intricacies of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology but also honed invaluable skills such as communication, empathy, and problem-solving. As a medical student, effective communication has been paramount in every aspect of my training. Moving away from home forced me to become a resilient and adaptable individual and I’m forever grateful for my time in Poland. Beyond academia, my professional journey has been multifaceted. Working as a Healthcare Assistant in various nursing homes, I've gained hands-on experience in providing holistic care and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams to support patients' needs. My time in retail and warehouse roles at Sainsbury's and Amazon respectively has further enhanced my adaptability and work ethic. These experiences have instilled in me essential skills such as time management, organization, and customer service, which are invaluable in any professional/tutoring setting. Furthermore, my extensive volunteer work reflects my commitment to community service and making a positive impact. Whether it's providing first aid with St. John Ambulance, assisting children with special educational needs and disabilities as a Classroom Assistant, or supporting the elderly at an Age Concern Centre, I've consistently demonstrated a dedication to serving others with empathy and compassion. Overall, my education and experiences have shaped me into a well-rounded individual, ready to excel in any challenge I undertake

Hi! My son started physics with his tutor Conor a month ago. I can tell you that I am happy about this decision as Alex, my son, has already better scores at physics tests at school. Conor is very helpful even outside tuition session and very patient. I noticed that if my son doesn’t understand something or is tired, Conor finds another way to make him understand giving him logical examples. When my son is happy, I am happy so Thank You Conor for being my son tutor and Thank you Alex Brown for choosing Conor for my Alex. I wish you Merry Christmas and a lot of snow!

The tutor has given feedback promptly. Also, she has been maintaining communication with the tutee on daily/weekly basis. The concerns and suggestion raised by me as a parent were acknowledged and promised to tailor the next sessions accordingly. Although the tutor is pursuing university studies, the time with tutee has been managed really well. I wish the same tutor to support my GCSE son for this year (2023-24).

My daughter made all the arrangements and interacted with the tutors then I got notifications of dates and times of sessions. My daughter was able to message the tutors before a session to say which topics she'd like covered in the upcoming session. Very useful.

My son grades in French, a core subject has improved since Oliver has started tutoring him. He is comfortable with his tutor and is even practising the language on his own. He sees his tutor as a mentor, is motivated to learn and speak French. Quote from my son " I can't wait to be able to speak French fluently!".

The benefits of a tutor to prepare for the IB

What is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme?

The IB Diploma is a two-year educational programme for students aged 16 to 19. It encourages curiosity about the world and the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as providing an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education.

It aims not only to develop students’ knowledge in a range of subjects and disciplines, but helps them become confident, self-motivated and resilient global citizens.

The programme is composed of six academic subject groups along with the Diploma Programme (DP) Core. The DP Core requires students to reflect on the nature of knowledge in a course called Theory of Knowledge (ToK), participate in independent research to produce an Extended Essay (EE), and engage in extracurricular activities related to Creativity, Action and Service (CAS).

What subjects are covered in the IB Diploma Programme?

Subjects are offered at a Standard and Higher Level. Students must pass at least three subjects at Higher Level and a total of six from the following list:

  • Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature
    • Group 2: Language Acquisition
    • Group 3: Individuals and Societies
    • Group 4: Sciences
    • Group 5: Mathematics
    • Group 6: The Arts

Each subject is scored from 1-7, and up to 3 additional points may be awarded for the ToK essay and the EE. A minimum of 24 points is required to pass, with 45 points the maximum that can be achieved. The CAS does not count towards the final score but must be completed to earn the diploma.

In general, a score of 30 points or higher is considered enough to gain admission to many universities, with more selective universities requiring a score of 40 or higher.

How to get good results in the IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma is a rigorous academic programme which many students find challenging, which can lead to overwhelm, a loss of motivation and procrastination.

It’s vital to start early when it comes to preparing for the exams. Revising should ideally be done in short amounts daily and balanced across multiple subjects. Completing past papers will familiarise you with the types of questions asked and improve your exam technique.

Using an IB tutor is a sure path to success as they can teach effective learning strategies, help you gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter, and work with you to develop a realistic and achievable study schedule that will keep you on track throughout the year.

GoStudent has a range of IB tutors that have direct experience in teaching the curriculum and understand the assessment methods. They have a special focus on the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay and the Extended Essay, teaching the necessary skills and strategies to succeed in both as well as help across different subjects within the level.
