I spent ten years living in Athens, Greece where I worked as a private tutor: teaching TEFL to a wide variety of people - from complete beginners to students wishing to take Cambridge Proficiency exams in order to access UK universities. I have a BA Hons degree in Modern Languages: English/French with a module in Classical Greek Language and Literature. I believe in stress-free lessons , and learning in a relaxed setting. I am an experienced educator with a doctorate in Mathematics from Imperial College London, currently working as an Associate Lecturer at a higher education institute in the UK. I have always loved mathematics since I was a child; I see solving mathematical problems almost like playing a game, and above all it gives me great satisfaction! Mathematics is a universal language allowing questions to be answered in a non-subjective way, and I believe that this is one of the greatest strengths and beauties of the subject!

Levels & Subjects I teach: GCSE: Chemistry A-level (IB): Chemistry Exam Board experience: I have personally tutored students completing AQA GCSE chemistry and A-level students doing OCR chemistry. I do however understand how to access and utilise specific exam board specifications for teaching so would be happy to help students achieve qualifications with any UK board (e.g AQA, Edexcel and OCR). Languages: Native English speaker SEND (Special Education Needs and Disability) experience: I currently have no experience teaching children with additional needs and disabilities. Preferred student age groups: Both A-level and GCSE students About me: Hi there! my name is Joe and I currently studying for a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Sussex. Before joining the Sussex I obtained my masters degree in chemistry from the University of York graduating with first-class honours. I particularly enjoy spending time in the lab, with my work being focused on developing new chemical reactions. Outside of the lab, you can usually find me strategising over the chess board, exploring worlds in the latest video games or stopping my cats from causing chaos! As a tutor, I hope to make chemistry more accessible and hopefully enjoyable for students! Typically, my lessons consist of explaining concepts to students that they have been struggling with, followed by crucial problem-solving and exam practice to build confidence. Following each session/ topic, you can expect homework/ exam questions, which I will mark and provide crucial regular feedback. I am currently a 3rd year PhD student at the University of Sussex. My research is based within organic chemistry and is centred on developing new reactions of interest to the pharmaceutical industry. Before joining Sussex I completed MChem at the University of York graduating with First-class honours. Prior to joining the University of York, I attended Oakwood Park Grammar school where I completed both my A-level and GCSE qualifications the results of which are detailed below. A-Levels: A*A*AA (including EPQ) GCSEs: 7A*'s, 1A, 1B, 8, 7, 6 Since 2019 I have been a personal mentor for chemistry. Whilst still attending school I would meet weekly with 6 students on an individual basis to help prepare them for either their upcoming A-level or GCSE exams. The enjoyment gained from tutoring both at school and privately has led me to sign up for GoStudent where I hope to create an engaging and inspiring learning environment for pupils.

What is Key Stage 4?
Key Stage 4 (KS4) comprises Year 10 and Year 11, when students are aged between 14 and 16. During this time they are working towards their GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education), which are a gateway to further education and career paths.
What subjects are covered in Key Stage 4?
The national curriculum offers the following subjects:
Compulsory subjects that must be taken by all students are:
Schools must also offer at least one subject from each of these areas:
Academic students may be encouraged to take the English Baccalaureate, or EBacc. This is not a separate qualification, but a combination of six different GCSEs: English, maths, two sciences, a language and either history or geography.
Schools must also provide relationships, sex and health education and Religious Education (RE). Parents can ask for their children to be taken out of sex education lessons and all or some of RE lessons.
What is the focus of KS4?
The focus at KS4 is around preparing pupils for their transition to post-16 provision at the end of Year 11, for example A-levels, BTECs or the International Baccalaureate (IB).
Most students work towards national qualifications, usually their GCSEs. This is when they will start to study subjects that align with their strengths, interests and future goals, and at a greater depth than they have been able to before.
How to choose a KS4 tutor
Many students struggle with the one-size-fits-all approach often found in classroom settings. This can lead them to develop a negative mindset towards learning and a loss in confidence in their abilities. They can fall behind in their schoolwork and lose the motivation to put in the required effort to succeed.
KS4 tutors can provide targeted support in specific subjects where students may be struggling or need extra help to excel. This can be especially helpful if the student has special educational needs such as ADHD or dyslexia.
While most final exams take place at the end of Year 11, coursework and assessments are completed throughout the stage, so it’s important students always perform to their full potential.
GoStudent tutors have expertise in specific subject areas on the curriculum and offer a personalised approach tailored to individual needs, strengths, and weaknesses. They can close knowledge gaps, keep learning on track and help with exam preparation.
In addition, they can teach effective study techniques and time management strategies which can significantly improve performance, not only in KS4 but for the rest of the student’s academic career.
How much does private KS4 tuition cost?
Prices for private KS4 tuition can be as low as £21.99. The cost of each individual lesson will depend on how many lessons your child takes per week and how long they would like tuition for. Book a free trial session to see how affordable private KS4 tutoring can be with GoStudent.
How many other levels does GoStudent offer other than KS4 tuition?
As well as private KS4 tuition, GoStudent can help your child with 11 other levels. Pick from many subjects including Biology, French, Chemistry. And with GoStudent your child isn't tied into one level. If they are taking KS4 tuition but then need support with a different level, we can help them get that support with a tutor specialised in that level.
What are the benefits of private KS4 tutoring for your child?
There are many reasons why parents decide to hire a private tutor for KS4 tutoring. Some parents fear that they don’t have the knowledge to help their children with their homework or exam preparation. Others might not have the time to sit with children and work through homework. Our KS4 tutors can take away this stress by helping your child consolidate what they have been learning in school, working through their homework with them and building their confidence ahead of their exams. You can rest easy knowing that our tutors are experts in their subjects and have the knowledge and teaching abilities to not only spark your child’s interest in the subject but also foster a lifelong love of learning. Discover how your child can take advantage of these benefits by booking a free trial lesson.
