Title
Why should I find the best KS4 tutor for my child?
KS4 marks the beginning of the most crucial stage of your child’s education. Results from national examinations like GCSEs play a huge part in their future path through education and the job market. GCSE and NVQ performance will first determine A-Level options and ultimately influence access to university courses. With such high stakes to play for, it’s a good time to start thinking about how to find the best KS4 tutor for your kid in one or more of their subjects.
As a proactive parent, you’re probably keen to help and support your child as much as possible. However, KS4 national examinations like GCSEs have gone through a lot of changes in recent years and probably seem like a different beast to the coursework and exam-based system you experienced at school yourself. Unless you work in education and are familiar with the continuously evolving system, helping your kid with their studies will no doubt quickly bring up difficult challenges.
What’s more, while you may be pretty good at supporting them in certain subjects, it’s unlikely any parent has the necessary depth of knowledge or familiarity with the current system in all parts of the curriculum. Find the best KS4 tutor for your child and you can be confident they will reach their potential.
What does KS4 involve?
KS4 or Key Stage 4 refers to the educational programme for kids aged between 14 and 16 in Year 10 and 11, although in some schools, KS4 starts in Year 9. Pupils in KS4 work towards national qualifications set by one of the exam boards, typically GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education), but some may do NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications).
In England and Wales all KS4 students have to study the following ‘core’ and ‘foundation’ subjects:
Core subjects
English Language and English Literature
Maths
Science - Biology, Chemistry and Physics, or Combined Science
Foundation subjects
Citizenship
Computing
Physical education
Along with KS4 religious education (RE) and sex education, schools also have to offer kids lessons in at least one subject from each of the following areas:
Arts
Design and technology
Humanities: Including History and/or Geography
Modern foreign languages, including Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin), French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Irish (in N.Ireland), Italian, Japanese, Punjabi, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Urdu, or Welsh (in Wales)
Pupils in KS4 normally do at least 5 GCSEs with a minimum target of gaining 5 grades between 4 and 9, particularly in English, Mathematics, and Science.
The menu of available subjects and exams differs from school to school and between exam board regions. In England, schools are expected to provide at least one ‘package’ of subjects that allow pupils to qualify for the English Baccalaureate (Ebacc), a government scheme which measures the proportion of children getting a grade 5 or above in GCSE English, Maths, and Science, along with a humanity and a language subject.
