I have been working as a freelance English tutor since 2023, working with online tutoring companies GoStudent, Edumentors and Tutorful, and Glasgow-based in-person company Clever Tutors. I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a First Class Honours in Drama and Contemporary Performance in 2023, and am currently completing a part-time Master's in Theatre Studies at the University of Glasgow. Having left school in 2019 with an A in Advanced Higher English and seven Highers, I am very familiar with the difficulties many students face when sitting their SQA exams. I have also tutored pupils at the BGE/KS3 stage, working with them on reading, writing and literacy to help them develop important life skills that improve their performance across the curriculum. I have also tutored GCSE English for the AQA and EdExcel curriculums, helping numerous students improve their mock exam results in both English Language and Literature and supporting them through their exams. Before tutoring English, I was an assistant tutor for the LAMDA Acting classes at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness for two years, and served as the CREATIVE Ambassador to Millburn Academy, directing the school drama club for three years. My tutoring style focuses on the student, working with them to identify their needs and goals, creating a learning plan that engages their creativity and providing support beyond the lessons through the setting of homework and challenges to further the student's learning. I always take time to get to know each student on an individual basis to better tailor my lessons to their needs and interests, and I combine a laid-back approachability with structure as needed. I have previously worked with young people with ADHD, autism and dyslexia, and have received positive feedback from parents and pupils who have benefitted from my patience, passion and diligence. Outside of teaching, I am a writer and theatre director. I love films, playing music and cooking. Hello, my name is Kirstie and I have been teaching for 21 years. I have spent time both in British secondary schools and in schools in Vietnam and Singapore. My main subject and passion is the study of History and I can teach this from Key Stage 3 all the way up to A-Level. My favourite period is the Tudors and I particularly enjoy the stories of the women of this time. I also tutor KS3 English and GCSE English Language and English Literature and am very familiar with AQA, Eduqas and Edexcel exam boards. I also have experience teaching Geography up to GCSE and find the two subjects actually quite complement each other with many of the themes over-lapping. I discovered a love for geography from my love of the great outdoors – I would often find myself on the top of a mountain admiring glacial landscapes and wondering how all the features were formed. This in turn links to my philosophy for education: I believe education should be a journey of discovery that allows the learner to move forwards with their knowledge and understanding of the world around them without putting them under so much pressure that they don’t enjoy it. I believe that effort is necessary in order to be successful, but that learning should not be a struggle or something that is dreaded. I am here to help students achieve their goals and become successful members of their community. In my spare time I enjoy running and drinking coffee with friends. I have 2 cats and have been married for almost 7 years. I am currently learning French in order to pursue my dream of moving to France to start a new life on the continent. As well as my degree in History and English and Literary Studies and my PGCE History, I have a TESOL certificate. I spent a month in Prague getting my TESOL and then taught ESL in Vietnam for 2 years. Outside of classroom education, I have my Lowland Leader award and spent 4 years running the Duke of Edinburgh award at my school.

ABOUT ME I have a deep interest in history, human and physical geography, anthropology, technology, architecture and engineering. I especially enjoy the history and geography of languages and language families. I am a keen traveller, audiophile and technophile, with a love for all kinds of technologies, analogue and digital, new and old. Thanks to COVID I learnt a lot of DIY skills through necessity. My house also has a garden full of fruit trees, so I guess that would make me an amateur gardener by default. I try to keep fit by cycling when possible, but my favourite sport is swimming. TEACHING EXPERIENCE/PREFERENCES The subjects I teach are History, English Literature and Language for GCSE and A-level, as well as EFL/ESL English. I tend to teach students aged 14+, so from Year 9 to Year 13 or older, but I do have a few students younger than this. I use a variety of teaching approaches, ranging from traditional methods of text analysis to modern forms of teaching, such as interactive quizzes, questionnaires and even YouTube videos if they benefit the students learning style. Exam Board Experience: AQA, Edexcel and OCR in the main. WJEC/Eduqas to a lesser extent. Languages:- English: as a first language to advanced level. Turkish: fluent to college level.

Hi! My son started physics with his tutor Conor a month ago. I can tell you that I am happy about this decision as Alex, my son, has already better scores at physics tests at school. Conor is very helpful even outside tuition session and very patient. I noticed that if my son doesn’t understand something or is tired, Conor finds another way to make him understand giving him logical examples. When my son is happy, I am happy so Thank You Conor for being my son tutor and Thank you Alex Brown for choosing Conor for my Alex. I wish you Merry Christmas and a lot of snow!

The tutor has given feedback promptly. Also, she has been maintaining communication with the tutee on daily/weekly basis. The concerns and suggestion raised by me as a parent were acknowledged and promised to tailor the next sessions accordingly. Although the tutor is pursuing university studies, the time with tutee has been managed really well. I wish the same tutor to support my GCSE son for this year (2023-24).

My daughter made all the arrangements and interacted with the tutors then I got notifications of dates and times of sessions. My daughter was able to message the tutors before a session to say which topics she'd like covered in the upcoming session. Very useful.

My son grades in French, a core subject has improved since Oliver has started tutoring him. He is comfortable with his tutor and is even practising the language on his own. He sees his tutor as a mentor, is motivated to learn and speak French. Quote from my son " I can't wait to be able to speak French fluently!".

What is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme?
The IB Diploma is a two-year educational programme for students aged 16 to 19. It encourages curiosity about the world and the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as providing an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education.
It aims not only to develop students’ knowledge in a range of subjects and disciplines, but helps them become confident, self-motivated and resilient global citizens.
The programme is composed of six academic subject groups along with the Diploma Programme (DP) Core. The DP Core requires students to reflect on the nature of knowledge in a course called Theory of Knowledge (ToK), participate in independent research to produce an Extended Essay (EE), and engage in extracurricular activities related to Creativity, Action and Service (CAS).
What subjects are covered in the IB Diploma Programme?
Subjects are offered at a Standard and Higher Level. Students must pass at least three subjects at Higher Level and a total of six from the following list:
Each subject is scored from 1-7, and up to 3 additional points may be awarded for the ToK essay and the EE. A minimum of 24 points is required to pass, with 45 points the maximum that can be achieved. The CAS does not count towards the final score but must be completed to earn the diploma.
In general, a score of 30 points or higher is considered enough to gain admission to many universities, with more selective universities requiring a score of 40 or higher.
How to get good results in the IB Diploma Programme
The IB Diploma is a rigorous academic programme which many students find challenging, which can lead to overwhelm, a loss of motivation and procrastination.
It’s vital to start early when it comes to preparing for the exams. Revising should ideally be done in short amounts daily and balanced across multiple subjects. Completing past papers will familiarise you with the types of questions asked and improve your exam technique.
Using an IB tutor is a sure path to success as they can teach effective learning strategies, help you gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter, and work with you to develop a realistic and achievable study schedule that will keep you on track throughout the year.
GoStudent has a range of IB tutors that have direct experience in teaching the curriculum and understand the assessment methods. They have a special focus on the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay and the Extended Essay, teaching the necessary skills and strategies to succeed in both as well as help across different subjects within the level.
