Hi! I am a friendly and supportive tutor specialising in Biology and Chemistry GCSE. I achieved A* AA in these subjects at A level and have experience tutoring students within school. I studied AQA exam boards for Biology and Chemistry, and Edexcel for Maths. My sessions will focus on building confidence and understanding by using past exam questions as examples to highlight key concepts and how to approach them during exams. Hello. My name is Darren Beech and I have been a Science Teacher for 26 years. I have taught all three science specialisms at key stage 3 (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), Biology and Chemistry at GCSE and A level Biology. I have taught all ability ranges over these years and have had exemplary success with the students in my classes. Having left main school teacher in the summer of 2025 to care for a disabled parent, I have moved into tutoring to continue passing on my passion for science and to help continue to get students to progress through their qualifications Having completed my GCSE;s (1992) and A levels (1995), I moved to the University of Derby to complete a BSC (HONS) degree in Biology (1998) and then onto a PGCE (Secondary science) with DeMontfort University (1999). I have then taught in 4 schools over my career as a teacher of science, where I also had additional responsibilities such as Head of Biology and Deputy Head of the 6th form.

Medicine is a rapidly changing field which requires an acknowledgment of life-long learning. During my studies of GCSE and A levels for chemistry and biology , my competence for scientific thinking has improved and has tied in with my ambitions and motivations to be a Doctor. This has broadened my method of approach to learning and has allowed me to use multiple ways in different situations to solidify my knowledge and understanding. This has proved extremely effective as it has enabled me to secure a place in a Russel group Medical School. One of these ways was realising that one of the best methods to test and improve my learning was to embrace teaching as a form of revision including teaching my peers various parts of the specification. This enhanced my appreciation for teaching and gave me the courage to become a tutor. Each individual is different, so in order to ensure the students I tutor can achieve their best, it is important for me to implement multiple methods of teaching as well as ways of revising. This will provide the students with a more personal way of teaching compared to something they may receive at school which may not be as tailored to their way of thinking and learning. Some methods includes mini-quizzing, simplified diagrams, question and process walkthroughs, and a balance of small visual, verbal , and audible cues which can make a huge difference to learning. Learning needs to be active and intuitive, so a variety of ways to learn is imperative. Maths and Science prevalently were my favourite subjects in school to learn as they had consistent logic which when understood was very rewarding. However despite enjoying the subjects, they can be equally as frustrating and require persistence. Appreciating the challenges and conceptual difficulties especially in Science and maths, helped developed my appreciation for different ways of effectively learning being required which helped me achieve all 8's and 9's in science and maths at GCSE and A's and A* at A level. Ultimately I believe being able to personally implement a range of methods to improve my own results will translate very well in my teachings to help students to also improve.
