My passion for math extends beyond teaching—I’ve applied mathematical principles to game design, making complex concepts engaging and accessible. Fluent in English, I connect well with students from diverse backgrounds, focusing on creating a supportive, dynamic learning environment. Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with my eight dogs and incorporating my love for music into lessons to make learning fun. I hold a Bachelor's in Applied Mathematics with a focus on Actuarial Science and have extensive experience in both teaching and practical math applications. I'm a medical student with 8+ years tutoring (A level / GCSE,). My expertise in chemistry / biology / maths. I have lots of experience in teaching humanity subjects such as English, sociology, and history. * Only AS chemistry and maths * I teach students at varying levels so it's important to adapt and adjust accordingly. If you're a visual learner, let's draw. If you're an auditory learner, let's discuss. If you're a note taker, let's learn the best note taking method for you! I do, however, encourage all my students to engage in spaced repetition learning. Whether we schedule that in during our sessions or if we use anki, this is probably the most important method of retaining information. Medical student with 5As in a-level biology, chemistry, maths, English, and sociology. GCSEs are all A*-A.

~ Welcome to Ms. A. L River's Classes ~ It is a pleasure to have you here on this journey! I cannot wait to meet your sproutlings (and establishing trees), continuing the process of discovering and nurturing their passions with them. I have six years experience of guiding and teaching students of various ages. All lessons are preplanned, with the student's interests and passions intentionally worked into the teaching. TEACHING TOOLS: * Screen sharing facilities, * co-writing, including mind-mapping and more * illustrations * key stage-relevant worksheets, * quizzes / past exam questions (familiar with AQA, OCR, WJEC, Pearsons/Edexcel) * recorded videos * thought provoking, practical application in the world relevant to the student WHO I WORK WITH: Pupils desiring improvement in their subjects (who may not yet know they will enjoy the process!) Particularly: - those who may find typical lessons less engaging of their focus, and enjoy a more interactive, magical style of teaching. - those who desire continuous encouragement, support, and prefer experimentation with various techniques & styles of teaching - those who desire more effort and time to build a trusting connection with their tutor - those who need fun as part of their learning experience (everyone!) I prefer to work with one pupil on a number of subjects rather than one, as subjects can tie-in and feed into one another in explaining the world through a multi-disciplinary lens. My Plan: Building ongoing connection and tailoring my sessions to your child's/ your specific learning style and/or needs. This part is integral to the learning process, and our first session will ensure an in-depth understanding of the student's most aligned learning style. SUBJECTS key stage 1-3 (ages 5-14) All core & foundation subjects as stated on the 'national curriculum in England - Framework document' GSCEs Key stage 3 (ages 14-16) all core subjects + Media + Drama/acting + Art & Design + Geography + History + ICT +R.S / Philosophy Sixth Form AS/A-Levels: *Psychology *English Lit (and English Lang) *History/ Classical Civilisations *Philosophy *Anthropology *Media and/or film studies I look forward to working with you, book a package to start now! What is the IGCSE?
The IGCSE (which stands for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is taken by students aged 14-16 (Year 10 and 11) to prepare them for further pre-university level study, such as A-levels.
It offers the same level of education as a traditional GCSE but does not have a UK-centric curriculum. For example, Shakespeare is a compulsory part of GCSE English Literature but not the IGCSE.
Children in state schools usually take GCSEs whilst those in private and international schools are more likely to take IGCSEs. Universities do not distinguish between the two when it comes to entry requirements. The exams are assessed externally.
What is the focus of the IGCSE?
The IGCSE focuses on developing understanding, skill, and knowledge in the following areas:
Subject content
The application of knowledge and understanding to new as well as familiar situations
Intellectual enquiry
Flexibility and responsiveness to change
Working and communicating in English
Influencing outcomes
Cultural awareness
What subjects are studied?
IGCSEs are available in a broad range of subjects but curriculums vary considerably depending on the school.
Students typically take seven to nine subjects, which must include the core subjects of English, mathematics and science (biology, chemistry, physics).
Optional subjects include humanities (history, geography), modern languages, the creative arts (art, music), STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and sports.
Preparing for the IGCSEs
Historically, the GCSE had a greater amount of coursework in the syllabus compared to the IGCSE. This has changed in recent years and both qualifications are based mainly on the end-of-course exams.
The exams test theoretical knowledge, practical skills, problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills – which are essential for further education as well as future careers.
Revision is key to retaining information and reinforcing understanding and should be done regularly rather than cramming all the content at the last minute.
Practicing past papers and taking mock exams will allow you to become familiar with the exam structure, improve your time management skills and discover any areas of weakness.
How can a tutor help with preparing for the IGCSEs?
A tutor can help at any stage of the process, whether it is over the two years of study or in the run-up to the exams.
GoStudent IGCSE tutors have experience in the specific subjects covered in the curriculum as well as a proven track record of success. They offer personalised lessons that can target problematic areas and can help create realistic and achievable study schedules that balance your time across the different subjects.
ICGSE tutors can also teach you effective study techniques. These will help you not only with the exams but in your future academic career.
If you are struggling with either the coursework or exam preparation, don’t delay seeking help. Feeling prepared and confident for your exams allows you to have a clear and focused mind - and achieve to your full potential.
Is private iGCSE tuition affordable?
Your child can get iGCSE tuition for as low as £21.99 per session. The price of each private tuition session depends on how regularly and for how long your child takes tuition with us. Book a free trial session with us and you can find out how affordable private tuition with GoStudent can be for you.
How many other levels does GoStudent offer other than iGCSE tuition?
As well as private iGCSE tuition, GoStudent can help your child with 11 other levels. Pick from many subjects including Spanish, Economics, French. And with GoStudent your child isn't tied into one level. If they are taking iGCSE tuition but then need support with a different level, we can help them get that support with a tutor specialised in that level.
How can your child benefit from iGCSE tuition?
The main reason that parents often start to look for a iGCSE tutor is to improve their child’s academic performance. It’s needless to say that tutoring will prepare your child for important exams and tests and address specific problem areas that they might have in a particular subject. Your child’s grades and understanding of the subject will improve when working with a tutor but there are also other benefits you might consider when deciding whether to opt for private iGCSE tutoring. Tutoring encourages self-directed learning. This means that your child will learn to take the initiative in their schoolwork, with the result that they will feel less overwhelmed or frustrated with school and more in control of their own learning. They will also learn study skills that will help them in life when it comes to university and beyond. Whether it’s learning to overcome obstacles in their studies, losing the fear of asking questions or even working on their social skills. Sign up for a free trial lesson to discover the benefits of tutoring for yourself.
Can my child take private iGCSE tuition online?
With GoStudent your child can get private tuition online from one of our iGCSE tutors. Online tuition is a great option for you and your child, meaning you don't have to take your child to a class or cover the cost of a tutor to come to your home. Why not see how private tuition can work for you and your child by booking a free trial lesson.
