My name is Monica and I have just graduated from St. Andrews with an MA in history and social anthropology. I always loved history and indeed still do. I choose to study anthropology because my English teacher got rather annoyed at my consistent questions about the characters' lives. "Just go study anthropology then" - and that is what I did. I am have graduated with a further masters with distinction in the history of Scotland and am moving onto a PHD this October. I love being able to combine my two passions in one degree. I try to explain it as anthropology giving an understanding of the present and history of the past. The marriage of the two academic subjects is interesting, indeed. For example, for my dissertation in the School of Anthropology looks at the community in Glasgow in 1592; tracking the influence of the Reformation at a local freedom. School exams definitely prepare you well for university expectations! There were some things that stood out for me at school as helping. I think you have to look after yourself as well as sticking to a study plan, definitely schedule breaks as well as something nice every now and again. I also think essay plans are key for the arts and english examinations and that is something I would be keen to help students create. Ultimately you need to understand the content, not merely recite a list of facts, once you do it is far easier to remember and argue your point in an exam.

I would describe my teaching style as engaging and adaptable I maintain an open stance towards feedback and novel ideas. I encourage my students to think beyond conventional boundaries, nurturing their unique style and thought paradigm. I strive to push them to present convincing and innovative points. However, I make lessons very practical; there is a science behind English and I can teach anybody how to improve because I know that. I am passionate about English because I believe it is an evergreen discipline. I love the theories and conversations that English illuminates and evokes in all its forms. Studying English language and literature was truly inspiring for me. My A level studies encompassed a multi-modal exploration, including speeches, plays, books, diaries, interviews, poems, comics, and blogs. This comprehensive exploration challenged me to grasp the nuanced aspects of communication, persuasion and emotion. Moreover, it granted me the opportunity to glean insights from numerous authors representing diverse cultural and historical backgrounds. Hence, I am a better communicator and empathetic person which shines through my teaching. Subjects Taught: English language and literature A level English language/literature Gcse Other comments: I love business and sports! I pursued my undergraduate studies at the University of Nottingham from September 2020 to July 2023, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Economics with International Economics. Prior to that, I completed my A-Levels at King Edward VI Five Ways School in Birmingham from August 2018 to July 2020, achieving outstanding grades of A*A*A in Mathematics, English Language and Literature and Economics respectively. My academic journey began at King Edward VI Aston Birmingham, where I completed my GCSEs from September 2016 to July 2018, earning notable results including 4 grade 9s, 2 grade 8s, and 2 grade 7s, with grade 9 distinctions in English Language

I studied in Singapore for secondary and high school, so I am familiar with the British O level and A level syllabi, which are used in Singapore with minor variations. Currently I am studying social sciences in second year at Sciences Po Paris campus of Le Havre and the program is in English. I have been teachign English language and grammar, Mathematics, History, and Biology to students up to secondary level both online and offline for the past 2 years. I am a passionate and patient teacher dedicated to making learning enjoyable and rewarding to my students. In my spare time, I write and produce for a podcast and a campus newspaper in English, and I'm in the orchestra of Le Havre as a violinist. My first language is Mandarin. Research Experience: I had research attanchment at Nanyang Technological University before coming to France for my University, under the Biochemistry department. I also interned at the Singapore Environmental Agency under the Wolbachia project for dengue control. This experience gave me a 3-month laboratory working experience with leading biologists and bio-engineers in the field of infectious disease control, which made me interested in the public health sector and related social policies.

~ Welcome to Ms. A. L River's Classes ~ It is a pleasure to have you here on this journey! I cannot wait to meet your sproutlings (and establishing trees), continuing the process of discovering and nurturing their passions with them. I have six years experience of guiding and teaching students of various ages. All lessons are preplanned, with the student's interests and passions intentionally worked into the teaching. TEACHING TOOLS: * Screen sharing facilities, * co-writing, including mind-mapping and more * illustrations * key stage-relevant worksheets, * quizzes / past exam questions (familiar with AQA, OCR, WJEC, Pearsons/Edexcel) * recorded videos * thought provoking, practical application in the world relevant to the student WHO I WORK WITH: Pupils desiring improvement in their subjects (who may not yet know they will enjoy the process!) Particularly: - those who may find typical lessons less engaging of their focus, and enjoy a more interactive, magical style of teaching. - those who desire continuous encouragement, support, and prefer experimentation with various techniques & styles of teaching - those who desire more effort and time to build a trusting connection with their tutor - those who need fun as part of their learning experience (everyone!) I prefer to work with one pupil on a number of subjects rather than one, as subjects can tie-in and feed into one another in explaining the world through a multi-disciplinary lens. My Plan: Building ongoing connection and tailoring my sessions to your child's/ your specific learning style and/or needs. This part is integral to the learning process, and our first session will ensure an in-depth understanding of the student's most aligned learning style. SUBJECTS key stage 1-3 (ages 5-14) All core & foundation subjects as stated on the 'national curriculum in England - Framework document' GSCEs Key stage 3 (ages 14-16) all core subjects + Media + Drama/acting + Art & Design + Geography + History + ICT +R.S / Philosophy Sixth Form AS/A-Levels: *Psychology *English Lit (and English Lang) *History/ Classical Civilisations *Philosophy *Anthropology *Media and/or film studies I look forward to working with you, book a package to start now!
